Everest Base Camp Trek via Jiri

Everest Base Camp Trek through Jiri
On 10th march 1953, a team of 12 mountaineers from New Zealand and Britain, led by General sir John Hunt, are preparing to climb Mount Everest from Bhadgaon( Bhaktapur), only 20 kilometers away from Kathmandu. With them are early 400 Nepalese porters, recruited to carry eight tonnes of material and equipment. The endless climb slowly begins as the sun rises. Hundreds of curious Nepalese have come to watch, with disbelief, the white foreigners who claim they can conquer and hoist their flag on top of Mt. Everest, the Mother Goddess, the highest mountain in the world. It took this unusual caravan more than fifteen days to reach Namche Bazar, in the high mountain region in Khumbu. The rest of the story is now a legend. On 29th May, at 11:30 am , Nepali, Tenzin Norgay and New Zealander, Edmund Hillary, were the only two men to reach the summit, the first time anyone hand ever climbed the Roof of the world.

The following itinerary gives you to follow in the tracks of these pioneers. Much has changed over the last 44 years, the most important of which is the road between Kathmandu and Jiri, which has reduced the older 1953 route by several days.

For the first six days, the path goes across a hilly region, with an average altitude between 2,500 and 3,000 meters, where terraced cultivations dominate. What may seen as an easy walk is in fact not, as the local irrigation system creates complications. the area is irrigated by two tributaries of the sun Kosi the Khimti Khola and Lekhu Khola - which flow from the north to the south, while the route goes from the west to the east. This means that you have to go across terrain riddled by rivers, and cross at least one pass almost every day.
After Nunthala, the path meets the Dudh Koshi Valley and takes a northward direction until Namche. Both the countryside and the people change, as you enter the homeland of the Sherpas, a people who occupy a special place in the history of mountaineering.
